The German Institute for Construction Engineering has once again approved BASF’s extruded polystyrene foam Styrodur® 3035 CS, 4000 CS and 5000 CS for use in construction as load-bearing thermal insulation under foundation slabs. In comparison to the materials that had been approved until now, the permissible long term compressive strength was raised for each of these products by an additional 10 kPA.

BASF's Neopor® foam insulates modern passive houses in Switzerland
The Anliker AG, a construction company based in Lucerne, recently completed the first multiple-dwelling project in Switzerland to be built to the eco-efficient German passive-house standard. The development at Rothenburg is the first to receive a special building award from Solar Agentur Schweiz, a Swiss energy conservation foundation. BASF contributed to this success by supplying the Neopor® foam wall insulation. The expandable polystyrene insulates the facades of all loft houses and villettes of the development.

BASF’s plastic Ultramid® in new power-assisted steering system in Volkswagen and BMW cars
Automotive systems maker ZF Lenksysteme of Germany is the first company to use a plastic gear wheel in electric power steering units now being fitted to medium-sized passenger cars such as the new Golf or the BMW Z4 roadster. A plastic worm wheel driven by a power-assistance servo-motor is made from Ultramid® A4H, a nylon resin from BASF.

A new mass air flow (MAF) sensor developed by Siemens VDO Automotive AG is now being used by two large European car makers. The Siemens SIMAF SP/1 sensor, part of the engine management system, is small, accurate and offers design flexibility. The main plastic parts of the sensor assembly are moulded from Ultradur®, the PBT (polybutylene terephthalate) from BASF.

A seat maker, Groupe JSO (Toulouse, France), has patented a special process that now allows Basotect® to be used for cushioning in combination with other foam materials. Seat cushions containing the melamine foam are much lighter than conventional ones.

BASF plastics chosen for multi-purpose utility vehicle
Multicar, the specialist utility-vehicle maker from Walterhausen, Germany, turned to space-frame technology when designing the driver’s cab of its latest product, the FUMO multipurpose vehicle. The cab consists of a steel frame – a so-called “space-frame” – clad with adhesively bonded plastic panels. The plastic panels are thermoformed from Luran® S, one of BASF’s specialty Styrenic polymers.

Actaris, based in Reims, France, is one of the world’s leading suppliers of equipment for measuring the flow of gases and liquids. The company has recently begun to use Ultraform® polyoxymethylene (POM) supplied by BASF for the housing of the measuring unit of the Gallus 2000 gas meter. The combination of high dimensional stability together with easy and cost efficient processing is what prompted Actaris to use this material.

BASF specialists have supported the engineers from KTSN (Kunststofftechnik Sachsen in Saxony, eastern Germany) with their expertise and with Ultramid® A3HG7, a nylon 6.6 resin.

The SXS plug has obtained official approval for attaching objects to cracked concrete substrates. The UX can be used in hollow walls as well as in solid material. Both plugs are made of Ultramid® B, a nylon 6 from BASF.
