The classification of N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as "toxicologically questionable" is currently being discussed by the European Union's Commission. BASF has been on top of the issue almost from the start and began to search for a replacement. In recent years NMP gained substantial acceptance as a multi-faceted solvent in various industrial sectors.

Actually, the intermediate 2-methoxy- ethylamine (2-MEA) was to be phased out of production within BASF altogether. Heretofore it had been used mostly in the production of textile dyestuffs. But now it has emerged as an important component for a pharmaceutical product.

Dr. Karin Sperling, head of New Business Development since March 1, 2004, earned a doctorate in chemistry and has been with BASF since 1984. It is now possible for customers of the Operating Division Intermediates to have Koresin® phenolic resin orders shipped either on wooden or plastic palettes. The use of the new type of platforms made with recycled plastic contributes to the improvement of the intermediate. Moreover the plastic version weighs about 1.7 kilograms less than its wooden counterpart.
