BASF wins two “IChemE Awards”

BASF received the top award – the “Entec Medal” – at the “IChemE Gala Awards Evening” in recognition of the development and application of its innovative ionic liquids. The company was also honored for developing dividing wall columns and for being the first company in the world to use this technology at the production scale. BASIONICSTM – A broad Portfolio of Ionic Liquids

Many chemical processes involve the formation of acids that must be removed in order to prevent decomposition of the finished product.
The conventional way to scavenge acids is to add a base, which reacts with the acid to form a solid salt. Removing these salts is a very complex process, however. The BASF Operating Division Intermediates has now developed a process called BASILTM technology that produces liquid salts, known to experts as Ionic Liquids. The developers of BASILTM received the BASF Innovation Award in October 2004 and the Innovation Award sponsored by the journal European Chemical News.
BASF markets its portfolio of Ionic Liquids under the trade name BASIONICSTM. The current portfolio comprises more than 20 different Ionic Liquids.
