Inside Life Sciences News - For customers and business partners of BASF’s Operating Divisions Intermediates, Inorganics and Petrochemicals

FOREWORD

Dear Customers and Business Associates,

What determines a product's success at the end of the day? Quality and price are certainly important. As are customer service, effective logistics, and, ultimately, supplier reliability. What counts for the customer, though, is not only what is produced but – to an increasing extent – how it is produced and marketed. Sustainable development, environmental protection, efficient use of natural resources and Responsible Care standards will be important criteria determining purchasing decisions in the years to come.

This is a trend the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industry is already familiar with today. The industry must meet high expectations and stringent requirements in terms of modern, environmentally compatible and safe manufacturing processes. These are demands which are equally relevant to suppliers.

BASF is happy to meet the challenges involved. We are committed to doing our very best to help our customers become more successful – and that includes issues like sustainable development, for example in relation to innovations that help to minimize waste. Examples of what we are doing in this area include the development of biochemical methods, highly selective reagents and clean processes such as the electrochemical production of 2,5-DMT (more about these issues is contained in this newsletter).

Our approach is also perceived and appreciated by the public. For instance, BASF has now been included in the New York research and advisory firm Innovest's "Global 100" list. This list is a who's who of the world's most successful companies in the areas of environmental, social and corporate governance. The "Global 100" list was selected from more than 1800 globally operating companies. Innovest singles BASF out for praise for its environmental governance, development of sustainable products, and the eco-efficiency analysis tool developed by BASF.

Our intentions can be achieved only with your input. Keep us up to the mark on these important issues, especially in terms of our environmental, health and safety responsibility!
