This process has been patented by BASF and stands out through a chlorine-free synthetic pathway, starting from readily available raw materials. MSA 100 is odorless, colorless and chloride-free. It exhibits very low sulfate content, very low content of organic by-products (i.e. methanesulfonate), and has very low heavy metal content.
BASF's MSA 100 is the only methanesulfonic acid available that is being distilled after synthesis. This explains the outstanding quality and purity of MSA 100. It is offered in high purity, with broad applications as a reagent in the chemical synthesis of intermediates (esterification, alkylation and condensation reactions) or the salt formation of pharmaceutical actives.
The production of MSA 100 takes place at BASF's "Verbund" site in Ludwigshafen, Germany, in tens of metric tons per year volumes.
